A tour of our beautiful city's Community Gardens!

As we head deeper into harvest season, the light and airy colours of summer are gently being replaced by the rich, jewel tone hues of autumn. A recent afternoon walk through my local community garden revealed rows of leggy, dark green kale, ruby red dahlias and once verdant foliage now in various shades of yellow, purple and brown.

Regardless of the time of year, Cypress Community Garden is a plant lover’s urban oasis, a place to connect with neighbours and a spectacular landscape to follow the seasons. The summer months are a showcase of the prettiest flowers, each plot displaying an array of different plants that reflect the gardener’s individual botanical taste.

Running along a former CPR rail line, this once derelict site is now home to several garden plots maintained by residents of the Kitsilano community. For those of us who only dream about having an outdoor space to call our own, it’s a special place to admire the wildflowers, grasses, vines and perennials planted by others.
